As lacrosse continues to grow in popularity in Section 9, local fans will get an opportunity to experience the highest level of boys' lacrosse next year.
Middletown High School was awarded the state bid to host the 2012 boys' lacrosse state championships, the school announced Monday. Middletown hosted the boys' soccer state championships for the first time last year and will do so again this fall.
"We're really excited for us and the community," said Midldetown athletic director David Coates. "It brings more revenue into Middletown. We did a nice job of hosting the soccer championships and a lot of teams and players liked the surface. I think that played a big part of it."
According to Section 9 boys' lacrosse chairperson and Saugerties boys' lacrosse coach Bob Slate, the state committee asked if Middletown would be interested in hosting the event, and then Middletown put a bid in September.
The boys' lacrosse state championship site alternates every year between the Eastern (Sections 1, 2, 9, 8 and 11)and Western conferences (Sections 3, 4, 5, 6, 10). This year's state championship is at Cicero-North Syracuse High School (Section 3), which has a facility similar to Middletown. The state requires that the host school must have a field turf.
Middletown has hosted either the regionals or the state semifinals in the past two seasons. Marist College is hosting the state semifinals this year.
"I think our friends on Long Island, including the coaches, players and athletic directors, have spoken highly of the Middletown facility, and that helped us get the bid," Slate said. "I think this is a big chance for the area to see lacrosse at that level. A lot of people still don't understand how big it is in the country, not just the state."
Section 9 actually hosted the boys' lacrosse championships in 1994 at Dietz Stadium in Kingston, Slate said. In the past decade, West Point has hosted the state semifinals twice.
